Zanu PF is to hold its annual conference from Wednesday to Friday next week. It is expected that President Mugabe’s bid to stand for another term as President will be endorsed. The 86 year-old ruler appears to have crushed dissent and his succession is one subject that will not be discussed at the three-day conference. Zanu PF is also expected to give the nod to President Mugabe’s unpopular push for fresh elections mid next year.
Other reports show how Zanu PF has already launched campaigns aimed at the re-election of Mugabe, while its withdrawal of support to POSA amendments might be seen as worrying signs of what lies ahead. It would therefore be interesting if the, so far classified, South African report on the 2008 elections will finally be made public, as South African newspaper Mail & Guardian has been pushing for.
ZimOnline has an extensive report on the Marange diamonds, also showing the dubious role of Mines Minister Obert Mpofu. Finally, the WikiLeaks reports are also very much in the news in Zimbabwe. Zanu PF is using it as a propaganda tool, but is also angered by some of the revelations about Tsvangirai’s actions.
