The current state of the Rule of Law in Zimbabwe is still worrying. Lawyers and judges are suppressed or bribed by the government. Human rights and international treaties are not respected and violations are occurring frequently.
This is the conclusion of the report ‘A Place in the Sun’ of Lawyers without Borders, the General Council of the Bar of England and Wales, the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales, and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, which will be presented on October 29 at Koster Lawyers in Haarlem.
The report ‘A Place in the Sun’ is the result of a special observation mission of Lawyers without Borders and other organizations. This mission examined current state of affairs concerning the Rule of Law in Zimbabwe. The report made some recommendations which the Zimbabwe-project group of Lawyers without Borders are now trying to work with.
On 29 October 2010 the report will be presented during a meeting of Lawyers without Borders at Koster Lawyers in Haarlem. During the meeting different speakers will discuss the work of Lawyers without Borders as well as the current situation in Zimbabwe. Special guest is Chris Mhike, lawyer and human rights activist in Zimbabwe.
