Zuma wants 2011 Zim election

South African President Jacob Zuma

In the run-up to the SADC summit in Namibia it is believed that South African President Zuma will push for an agreement in Zimbabwe to hold fresh elections in 2011. Recently, there has been more campaign rhetoric by Mugabe and Tsvangirai, and the jingles on ZBC suggests elections might be on the way.

A group of lawyers used the SADC summit to point at Zimbabwe’s ongoing disregard of rulings made by the SADC Tribunal, referring to rulings ordering Zimbabwe to compensate owners of farms that were seized.

Ahead of the visit of the KP review mission there were several reports of clean up operations going on in the Chiadzwa diamond areas. Villagers and illegal panners were chased away into the mountains, ahead of the KP team visit.

At the same time, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines were denied access to the diamond fields, which led to a statement of the Committee urging the authorities to allow the Committee to exercise its oversight responsibilities.

Finally, Harare airport authorities tricked the public and the world’s media into a believing a security drill last Thursday was a real crash.
