Chihuri out of job?

Police commissioner-general Augustine Chihuri’s term of office expired yesterday, with coalition government partners immediately saying the Zanu PF-alligned police boss is staying onto the post illegitimately with effect from today.

This could become a serious issue between the coalition partners in government and hamper further reforms. Following intense lobby by Robert Mugabe ahead of the recent AU summit, Zimbabwe’s civil society organisations have said the democratic transition in the country has ‘stalled’, and is in danger of being reversed by Robert Mugabe’s call for elections in the absence of credible reforms.

Other news this week concerns the saga around Mutare’s mayor Brian James and the fact that Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Gideon Gono released his controversial advisor Kereke from the Central Bank.
