Welshman Ncube set to take over MDC-M Presidency

As 2010 is coming to an end the political quarrels seem to intensify. Not only are the political parties contesting each other over the question if, when and how to hold elections, they are also faced with internal disputes and power struggles.

MDC-M saw their leader Mutambara step down, leaving party secretary-general Welshman Ncube the clear favourite to take over the presidency. Mutambara reportedly pulled out of the race last weekend after Ncube’s candidacy was endorsed by 11of the party’s 12 provinces.

Within Zanu, Mugabe has claimed his deputy and once-likely successor, vice-president Joyce Mujuru, has blown her chances to take over from him after she was caught working with Finance Minister Tendai Biti to usurp his powers on currency and exchange rate issues.

Furthermore, it is alleged that Mugabe’s real reason for insisting on harmonized elections is that he does not trust his Zanu PF MP’s and party activists to campaign for him, and he wants them tied up in their own parliamentary campaigns.

Wikileaks saw some further revelations about Zimbabwe, as a ‘cable’ dated September 2000 reported about a lucrative retirement offer made by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to President Mugabe.
