Opposition wins Speaker
The first opposition Speaker of the House of Assembly was elected in Zimbabwe yesterday. Lovemore Moyo, Chairman of the MDC-T party and legislator for Matobo won by 110 votes beating Paul Themba Nyathi who gannered 98 votes. This must have sent shockwaves to the ruling party which early in the morning had attempted to weaken the MDC-T votes by arresting two of its MP elects. The so called balance of power has seemed irrelevant as it is rumoured that most MDC MPs voted for Moyo. However, the MDC-M claimed that Moyo had support from a ZANU PF Matebeleland clique led by Sithembiso Nyoni. Meanwhile people continue to starve as humanitarian aid organisations are still banned. Moreover, the power sharing talks seem to have collapsed. The mediator, President Thabo Mbeki, has remained quiet about how to proceed.
